Siemens PLM Software has a very strong and active academic program, serving more than a million students annually at more than 10,000 partner institutions, offering software for use at every academic level. However, we have not provided a solution for individual students who wished to purchase, learn and use NX. Recently, we have addressed this need, and we are pleased to announce the NX Student Edition.

The NX Student Edition has been developed as a single-user solution. The Student Edition includes the complete suite of NX modeling, drafting, assemblies, and rendering capabilities, with NX Product Template Studio, complete documentation and self-teaching aids. NX Student Edition is delivered with a simple license install and a click-wrap license agreement.
The NX Student Edition is available initially through a specialist academic reseller, JourneyEd, and is listed on their websites, which include:
JourneyEd - http://www.journeyed.com/item/Siemens/NX+6/100965802
Academic Superstore - http://www.academicsuperstore.com/products/Siemens/NX+6/1307799
An international company, JourneyEd will handle all aspects of the transaction, including verification of student credentials and payments via credit cards or PayPal. JourneyEd will also promote NX Student Edition in their physical catalogs.
NX Student Edition is not intended to replace the existing academic solutions, but to supplement them. We believe it will help increase the availability of NX trained students in the future.

Does this student edition of NX also include the CAM part of NX? If so are there any restrictions on the CAM part?

Jon,
Thanks for the question.
At this time, the NX student edition is focused on CAD, not CAM.
Here are some of the features available:
* Freeform shape modeling, surface continuity and analysis, simulation and visualization tools
* 3D design: wireframe, surface, solid, and direct modeling
* Creation of high quality rendered images
* Knowledge capture and automation tools

Jerry,
Many universities are using Mastercam and Haas CNC machines because both companies have very aggressive educational programs and have donated their software and equipment to numerous teaching institutions. Examples in California are DeAnza College in Northern California and the NTMA in the Los Angeles area.
How does Siemens plan to make CAM software available to universities?

Do you have a student license for the Mac version?

Is there a Mac or Linux student edition available or in the works?
19 Jan 2010
Andy & William,
Today, we are only delivering the NX Student Edition for Windows.
As demand for Mac OS and Linux increases, we may add those OS’s too.

Jon,
Siemens PLM Software offers grants through its Global Opportunities in Product Lifecycle Management (GO PLM™) initiative, which leads the PLM industry in the commercial value of in-kind grants it provides at more than US$4 billion annually.
The initiative provides PLM technology to more than 1 million students annually at nearly 10,300 global institutions, where it is used at every academic level – from grade schools to graduate engineering research programs.
If you have any contacts at a university that is interested in getting NX, please send me their contact info, and I will have our GOPLM team get things started.

Hi,
Does the license include the software development modules?
Thanks

Jon,
We appreciate your comments but do not want to post derogatory comments towards competitors, which is why I omitted that part of your reply.
I value your comments, and hope to hear more of your views on this blog and your own.
Bottom line; we DO have a program to seed NX CAM into universities. We reach out to as many as possible with our team. If you know of any additional universities that could benefit from an NX software grant, I would be glad to engage our GO PLM team.

Harry,
No, the software development modules are not included in the student edition.
The student edition is focused on 3D design.
Thanks for the question,
Jerry

Is there as yet an NX 7 Student Version available? If so, when and where does it go on sale? If not, will I be able to upgrade from NX 6 to this without any additional cost?
19 Mar 2010
Atiba,
thanks for the question.
The current release of the NX Student Edition is based on NX6. An NX7 version is not available, yet.
When the next release is made available, you will have to purchase it through our specialist academic reseller.

Will this version work with WINDOWS 7 32 or 64 BIT?
And when is made avalilable the version NX7?
Thanks
25 Mar 2010
Esteemed Sirs,
Is there now (several months after the Windows student version has been released) any plans to sell a Mac student version?
Is there any place to be inscribed, so that Siemens would contact you whenever it is released?
I would encourage you to do so as so many of us are changing to the Mac OS X platform (even in Spain, which has never been seen, the universities are making special discounts to students to buy Apple computers) and you would have a major competitive advantage compared to your competitors (I will spare names…).
Thanks for creating such a great engineering software available for us no matter the platform.
Best regards,
David Escudero.

David,
Thanks for the comment. There seems to be a lot of demand for NX Student Edition on Mac OS, on this blog.
I have nothing new to announce today. I encourage you to subscribe to the RSS feed for this blog. When we announce something, we’ll also post a link on this blog.

Jerry,
First of all, thanks for the prompt response to my previous questions.
Secondly, would you be able to tell me where can I go to find out what features are available with the student version? The features I am most interested in knowing the availability of are motion simulation, strength wizard and human modelling.
Atiba
Dear Atiba,
No they are not. Only Drafting, Base Assembly, Modeling and FreeForm design are currently part of the NX Student edition.
